What is a Belt-Drive Turntable?
A belt-drive turntable is a type of record player in which the motor rotates the platter using a rubber belt rather than connecting directly to it. The motor is offset from the platter, and the belt transfers the motor’s motion to spin the record.
This design helps reduce vibrations from the motor reaching the platter and stylus. Because the belt absorbs some of the mechanical noise, belt-drive turntables are often valued for producing smoother and quieter playback, which can improve sound quality when listening to vinyl records.
Belt-drive turntables are commonly used in home listening and audiophile systems. While they typically provide excellent audio fidelity, they are less suited for DJ techniques such as scratching or rapid cueing because the belt system has lower torque and slower start-up compared to direct-drive designs.
