What is a Blanket License?
A blanket license is a type of license that allows a user to access and use a large catalog of copyrighted works under a single agreement. Instead of negotiating separate licenses for each individual work, the user receives permission to use all works within the licensing organization’s repertoire.
In the music industry, blanket licenses are commonly issued by performing rights organizations (PROs) to businesses such as radio stations, television networks, streaming platforms, restaurants, and concert venues. These licenses allow the user to publicly perform any song in the organization’s catalog.
The licensing fees collected from blanket licenses are then distributed as royalties to songwriters, composers, and music publishers based on how frequently their works are performed. This system simplifies licensing for both music users and rights holders while ensuring creators are compensated for the public use of their music.
