What is a Bus Compressor?

A bus compressor is a compressor used on a group of tracks or a mix bus to control dynamics and help multiple sounds blend together more cohesively.

Instead of processing a single track, a bus compressor works on the combined signal of several tracks, such as a drum bus, vocal group, or the entire stereo mix. It reduces dynamic peaks across the group, helping the elements sound more balanced and unified.

Bus compressors are commonly used in mixing and mastering to add glue and cohesion to a mix. By subtly controlling the dynamics of grouped signals, they can make the overall mix feel tighter, more polished, and more consistent.
