What is a CLAP Plugin?
A CLAP plugin is a type of audio plugin that follows the CLAP (CLever Audio Plugin) format, an open-source plugin standard designed for digital audio workstations (DAWs). It allows virtual instruments and audio effects to run inside music production software, similar to other plugin formats such as VST or AU.
CLAP plugins can function as virtual instruments, such as synthesizers or samplers, or as audio effects that process sound using tools like equalizers, compressors, reverbs, and delays. The format was created to provide modern capabilities such as improved CPU efficiency, flexible modulation systems, and advanced parameter control between the plugin and the host DAW.
The CLAP format was introduced by developers from companies including u-he and Bitwig. Because it is open-source and designed with modern audio production workflows in mind, CLAP has gained attention among plugin developers and DAW creators as a potential next-generation standard for audio plugins in music production.
