What is a Close Mic?

A close mic is a microphone placed very near to a sound source in order to capture a strong, direct signal while minimizing background noise and room reflections.

Close miking is commonly used when recording vocals, instruments, or amplifiers. By positioning the microphone only a short distance from the source, the recording emphasizes the detail, clarity, and presence of the sound while reducing the influence of the surrounding environment.

This technique is widely used in studio recording, live sound reinforcement, and broadcast production. Close microphones are often combined with room or ambient microphones to blend the direct sound with the natural acoustics of the space.
