What is a Digital Synthesizer?
A digital synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates sound using digital signal processing (DSP) rather than analog electronic circuits. Instead of producing sound through electrical waveforms directly, a digital synthesizer uses computer algorithms to create and shape audio signals.
Digital synthesizers can use a variety of synthesis methods such as FM synthesis, wavetable synthesis, additive synthesis, granular synthesis, and sample-based synthesis. These techniques allow the instrument to produce a wide range of sounds, from realistic instrument emulations to complex and evolving electronic textures.
Because digital synthesizers rely on software-based processing, they often provide extensive control, large sound libraries, and advanced modulation options. They are commonly found as hardware instruments as well as software plugins used in digital audio workstations for music production, sound design, and film scoring.
