What is a DMCA Takedown?
A DMCA takedown is a formal request made under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) asking an online platform or service provider to remove content that allegedly infringes on a copyrighted work. It is commonly used by copyright owners to protect their music, videos, images, and other digital content from unauthorized use online.
When a copyright holder discovers their work being used without permission on a website or platform, they can submit a DMCA takedown notice to the service provider hosting the content. The notice typically includes information identifying the copyrighted work, the location of the infringing material, and a statement asserting the copyright owner’s rights.
After receiving a valid DMCA takedown notice, the platform usually removes or disables access to the content to comply with copyright law and maintain legal protection under the DMCA’s safe harbor provisions. In some cases, the person who uploaded the content may submit a counter-notification if they believe the removal was incorrect.
