What is a Dolly Shot?

A dolly shot is a filmmaking camera technique where the camera moves smoothly toward, away from, or alongside a subject using a wheeled platform called a dolly. This movement creates dynamic motion in a scene and helps guide the viewer’s attention or enhance storytelling.

The dolly platform typically runs on tracks or wheels that allow the camera operator to move the camera steadily through space. Because the camera itself physically moves rather than simply zooming, the perspective and depth of the scene change naturally. Objects in the foreground and background shift relative to each other, creating a more immersive visual effect.

Dolly shots are commonly used to follow characters, reveal new elements in a scene, or build tension and drama. For example, a camera might slowly move closer to a character during an emotional moment, or travel alongside actors as they walk through a location.

This technique is widely used in film, television, and online video production, including content created for platforms such as YouTube. By adding controlled movement to the camera, a dolly shot helps make scenes feel more cinematic and visually engaging.
