What is a Granular Plugin?

A granular plugin is an audio processing or synthesis tool that uses granular synthesis to manipulate sound. It works by breaking an audio signal into very small fragments called grains, typically lasting only a few milliseconds, and then rearranging, overlapping, or modifying those grains to create new textures and effects.

Granular plugins often include controls for parameters such as grain size, density, position, pitch, and playback speed. By adjusting these settings, producers can stretch sounds, create evolving textures, transform samples, or generate entirely new sonic material from existing audio.

Granular processing is widely used in electronic music production, experimental sound design, film scoring, and ambient music.
