What is a Guzheng?

A guzheng is a traditional Chinese stringed instrument known for its graceful sound and expressive playing style. The instrument consists of a long wooden body with many strings stretched across movable bridges. When the strings are plucked, they produce bright, resonant tones that can be used to perform flowing melodies and rhythmic patterns.

Modern guzheng instruments typically have around 21 strings, though earlier versions had fewer. Musicians usually wear special finger picks on their right hand to pluck the strings, while the left hand presses or bends the strings on the other side of the bridges to change pitch and create vibrato effects. This technique allows performers to produce expressive slides, bends, and shimmering tones.

The guzheng has a history that dates back more than two thousand years and remains an important instrument in Chinese traditional music. It is often used in solo performances, orchestras, and cultural ensembles. Today, the guzheng continues to appear in film soundtracks, modern compositions, and cross-cultural music projects while maintaining its strong connection to Chinese musical heritage.
