What is a Harmonics (Strings)?
Harmonics on string instruments are special tones produced when a player lightly touches a string at specific points instead of pressing it fully down to the fingerboard. This technique causes the string to vibrate in smaller segments, producing a higher, bell-like pitch.
There are two main types of harmonics: natural harmonics and artificial (or false) harmonics. Natural harmonics occur when the player lightly touches certain natural division points on an open string, such as the halfway point. Artificial harmonics are created by stopping the string with one finger and lightly touching another point on the string with another finger to produce a higher harmonic tone.
Harmonics are often used in orchestral, chamber, and solo string music to create shimmering, ethereal sounds. Composers use them to add unusual color, light textures, or atmospheric effects to musical passages.
