What is a Jinghu?
A jinghu is a traditional Chinese bowed string instrument that is primarily used in Beijing opera (Peking opera). It is a small member of the huqin family of instruments and is known for its very high-pitched and penetrating tone, which allows it to stand out clearly during theatrical performances.
The jinghu has a small cylindrical resonating body made of bamboo and covered with animal skin, with a long slender neck extending upward. It usually has two strings, and the bow passes between the strings rather than across them. The instrument is held vertically on the player’s lap while the bow is moved back and forth to produce sound.
In Beijing opera orchestras, the jinghu typically serves as the lead melodic instrument, closely following and supporting the vocal lines of the performers. Its bright and expressive tone helps convey the dramatic emotions of the performance, making it one of the most important instruments in traditional Chinese opera music.
