What is a Modular Synthesizer?
A modular synthesizer is a type of synthesizer made up of separate individual components, called modules, that can be connected together to create custom sound synthesis systems. Instead of having a fixed signal path, users connect modules using patch cables to determine how the sound is generated and processed.
Typical modules in a modular synthesizer include oscillators, filters, envelopes, low-frequency oscillators (LFOs), amplifiers, and sequencers. Each module performs a specific function, and by patching them together in different ways, musicians can design unique signal chains and create a wide range of sounds.
Modular synthesizers are widely used in experimental music, electronic production, and sound design because they offer extremely flexible control over sound creation. Systems such as Eurorack modular synthesizers allow musicians to continually expand their setup by adding new modules, enabling nearly unlimited possibilities for sound design and musical experimentation.
