What is a Pitch-Class Set?

A pitch-class set is a group of distinct pitch classes treated as a collection without regard to octave placement. In music theory, a pitch class represents all notes with the same name across different octaves, meaning that C in any octave is considered the same pitch class.

In pitch-class set analysis, the exact register or order of notes is not the primary focus. Instead, analysts study the relationships between pitch classes within the set, such as the intervals they form and how they can be transformed through operations like transposition or inversion.

Pitch-class sets are an important concept in atonal and twentieth-century music analysis, where traditional tonal harmony may not apply. By examining how pitch classes are grouped and manipulated, theorists can better understand the structural organization of music that does not rely on conventional key-based harmony.
