What is a Publisher?
A publisher, or music publisher, is a company or individual responsible for managing and promoting the rights of musical compositions on behalf of songwriters and composers. Their primary role is to ensure that songs are licensed properly and that the creators receive payment when their music is used.
Music publishers handle tasks such as licensing compositions for recordings, films, television, advertisements, and other media, as well as collecting royalties generated from performances, mechanical reproductions, and synchronization uses. They also register songs with performing rights organizations and help track royalty payments.
In addition to managing rights and royalties, publishers often work to promote songs by pitching them to artists, producers, and media projects. In return for their services, publishers typically receive a share of the royalties generated by the compositions they represent.
