What is a Render in Place?

Render in Place is a feature in many digital audio workstations (DAWs) that converts a track or section of a track into a new audio file directly within the project. It processes the selected audio or MIDI, including instruments and effects, and replaces or duplicates it as a rendered audio clip on the timeline.

When a track is rendered in place, the DAW calculates the sound of the instrument, plugins, and automation applied to that track and creates a new audio file that contains the processed result. This audio clip is placed in the same position in the project so it stays perfectly aligned with the original arrangement.

Render in Place is commonly used to reduce CPU usage, simplify complex sessions, or commit certain effects to audio. It allows producers to convert virtual instruments or heavily processed tracks into audio while still keeping the project organized and synchronized.
