What is a Royalty?

A royalty is a payment made to the owner of intellectual property in exchange for the use of their work. In the music industry, royalties are paid to songwriters, performers, producers, and rights holders when their music is used, sold, streamed, or performed publicly.

Royalties can be generated from many different activities, including music streaming, digital downloads, physical sales, radio broadcasts, live performances, and synchronization in films or advertisements. Each time a licensed use occurs, the rights holder may receive a portion of the revenue generated.

Different types of royalties exist in the music industry, such as mechanical royalties, performance royalties, synchronization royalties, and neighboring rights royalties. These payments ensure that creators and rights holders are compensated whenever their music is used commercially or publicly.
