What is a Sequencer (Hardware)?
A hardware sequencer is a physical electronic device used to record, arrange, and play back sequences of musical notes, rhythms, or control signals. It allows musicians to program patterns that automatically trigger synthesizers, drum machines, or other electronic instruments.
Hardware sequencers typically organize music into steps or patterns, where each step represents a specific point in time within a sequence. Users can program notes, rhythms, and parameter changes into these steps, creating repeating musical phrases such as drum patterns, basslines, or melodic sequences.
These devices are widely used in electronic music production and live performance because they allow musicians to build complex patterns and control multiple instruments simultaneously. Hardware sequencers are often integrated into synthesizers, drum machines, and grooveboxes, but standalone sequencers are also used to control entire setups of electronic instruments.
