What is a Signal Chain?
A signal chain refers to the sequence of audio devices and processing stages that an audio signal passes through from the original source to the final output.
For example, in a recording setup, a signal chain might include a microphone, microphone preamp, audio interface, digital audio workstation (DAW), plugins or effects, and finally speakers or headphones. Each stage in the chain can affect the tone, level, and character of the sound.
Signal chains are important in both recording and live sound environments because the order of equipment and processing can significantly influence the final audio result. Properly organizing the signal chain helps maintain clean audio, control gain levels, and shape the sound effectively.
