What is a Skip Rate?
A skip rate is a metric used by music streaming platforms that measures how often listeners skip a song shortly after it begins playing. It represents the percentage of plays where the listener stops the track before listening to a significant portion of it.
For example, if a song is played 1,000 times and 300 listeners skip it quickly, the skip rate would be 30%. A high skip rate may suggest that listeners are not strongly engaged with the song, while a lower skip rate usually indicates that listeners are more interested in continuing to hear the track.
Skip rate is an important engagement metric on platforms such as Spotify. Streaming algorithms often consider listener behavior—including skips, saves, and repeat plays—when deciding which songs to recommend to other users. Because of this, maintaining a lower skip rate can help improve a song’s chances of reaching a wider audience.
