What is a Songwriter?

A songwriter is a person who creates the musical composition of a song, including the melody, harmony, and often the lyrics. Songwriters are responsible for the creative structure and musical ideas that form the foundation of a piece of music.

Some songwriters write both the music and the lyrics, while others may specialize in only one aspect, such as composing melodies or writing lyrics. In many cases, multiple songwriters collaborate to create a song, sharing credit for the composition.

Songwriters hold the copyright to the musical composition, which allows them to earn royalties when their songs are recorded, performed publicly, streamed, or licensed for use in media such as films, television shows, and advertisements.
