What is a Spectrum Analyzer?
A spectrum analyzer is an audio analysis tool used in digital audio workstations (DAWs) to visualize the frequency content of an audio signal. It displays how energy is distributed across different frequencies, allowing producers and engineers to see the balance of bass, midrange, and high frequencies in a sound.
Spectrum analyzers typically present this information as a graph where frequency is shown on the horizontal axis and amplitude (volume) is shown on the vertical axis. Low frequencies appear on the left side of the display, while higher frequencies appear on the right. Peaks in the graph indicate frequencies where the audio signal is strongest.
These tools are widely used in mixing and mastering to identify frequency imbalances, locate problematic resonances, and understand how different elements of a mix occupy the frequency spectrum. By visually analyzing the audio, engineers can make more precise equalization and tonal adjustments.
