What is a Stem Export?
A stem export is the process of rendering and exporting individual groups of audio tracks from a music project as separate audio files. Each stem contains a specific part of the mix, such as drums, bass, vocals, or instruments, rather than the entire song combined into one file.
In a typical stem export, related tracks are grouped together and bounced as single audio files. For example, all drum tracks may be exported as one drum stem, while vocals, guitars, and synthesizers are exported as separate stems. These files maintain the timing and arrangement of the original mix so they can be played together in synchronization.
Stem exports are widely used for mixing, mastering, remixing, film scoring, and live performance. They allow engineers or collaborators to work with individual parts of a production while preserving the structure and balance of the original project.
