What is a Stream Count?
A stream count is the total number of times a song has been played on a music streaming platform. Each time a listener plays a track long enough for the platform to register it as a valid play, the stream count increases. This number reflects how many times the recording has been listened to across the platform.
Streaming platforms typically require a listener to play a track for a minimum amount of time before it counts as a stream. For example, on Spotify a song must usually be played for at least about 30 seconds to be counted as a stream. This helps ensure that accidental clicks or very short plays are not counted as full listens.
Stream count is an important metric in the modern music industry because it measures the popularity and reach of a song. Higher stream counts can increase an artist’s visibility on streaming platforms and contribute to the royalties paid to rights holders.
