What is a Supercardioid Microphone?

A supercardioid microphone is a type of directional microphone with a supercardioid polar pattern, meaning it captures sound primarily from the front while providing even stronger rejection of sound from the sides compared to a standard cardioid microphone.

This pickup pattern is narrower than a cardioid pattern, allowing the microphone to focus more tightly on the intended sound source. However, supercardioid microphones typically have a small area of sensitivity directly behind the microphone due to the shape of the polar pattern.

Supercardioid microphones are often used in live sound, stage performances, broadcasting, and film production where strong isolation of a sound source is required. Their focused pickup pattern helps reduce background noise and feedback in noisy environments.
