What is a Tessitura?
Tessitura refers to the range of pitches that occurs most frequently in a musical part or passage, rather than the absolute highest and lowest notes that are possible. It describes the area of the range where the music primarily sits.
For example, a vocal or instrumental piece might technically reach very high or very low notes, but if most of the notes fall within a smaller portion of the range, that portion is considered the tessitura. This concept is especially important in vocal music, where a singer may be able to reach certain extreme notes but may not be comfortable singing there for long periods.
Tessitura is an important consideration in composition, orchestration, and vocal writing, because writing within a comfortable tessitura allows performers to produce their best tone and maintain endurance. A well-chosen tessitura helps ensure that a musical part is both expressive and practical to perform.
