What is a Timecode Vinyl?

Timecode vinyl is a special type of vinyl record used in digital DJ systems to control digital music files on a computer. Instead of containing recorded music, the record contains a continuous timecode signal that DJ software can interpret.

When the timecode vinyl is played on a turntable, the signal is sent through an audio interface or compatible DJ mixer to DJ software. The software reads the position, speed, and direction of the record and uses that information to control the playback of a digital audio file.

This system allows DJs to manipulate digital tracks using traditional vinyl techniques such as scratching, cueing, and pitch control. Timecode vinyl is commonly used in Digital Vinyl Systems (DVS), which combine the tactile feel of turntables with the flexibility of digital music libraries.
