What is a Tres?
A tres is a traditional Cuban stringed instrument that is closely related to the guitar. The instrument typically has six strings arranged in three pairs, known as courses, which is where the name tres—meaning “three” in Spanish—comes from. It has a wooden body similar to a small guitar and is usually played by strumming or plucking the strings.
The strings of the tres are tuned in pairs, allowing the instrument to produce a bright and rhythmic sound that stands out in musical ensembles. Musicians often play repeating melodic and rhythmic patterns known as guajeos, which help create the groove of the music. These patterns are an essential part of the instrument’s role in traditional Cuban music.
The tres is widely used in Cuban musical styles such as son cubano, salsa, and other Afro-Cuban genres. It often provides both rhythmic accompaniment and melodic lines within an ensemble. Today, the tres remains an important instrument in Latin music and continues to influence musicians and performers around the world.
