What is a Uhadi?
A uhadi is a traditional musical bow from southern Africa, particularly associated with the Xhosa people of South Africa. The instrument consists of a flexible wooden bow with a single string stretched between its ends and a hollow gourd attached as a resonator to amplify the sound.
The uhadi is played by striking the string with a thin stick while the musician holds the bow in one hand. The player often changes the pitch and resonance by adjusting the position of the gourd against the body or by altering the tension of the string. This allows the musician to create different tones and subtle rhythmic patterns.
The instrument is commonly used to accompany singing, especially in traditional Xhosa songs and storytelling. Performers often combine the rhythmic striking of the string with vocal melodies, creating a layered musical texture. The uhadi plays an important role in preserving cultural traditions and musical heritage within Xhosa communities.
