What is a Verse?
A verse is a section of a song where the lyrics usually change each time it appears while the melody and musical structure remain mostly the same. Verses are often used to tell the story or develop the theme of the song. Each verse typically adds new details or perspectives that move the narrative forward.
In many songs, the verse is followed by a chorus, which usually has the same lyrics and melody each time it repeats. While the chorus often contains the main hook or central idea of the song, the verses provide the surrounding context and build toward that main section.
Verses are commonly found in many styles of music including pop, rock, country, hip hop, and folk. They help structure the song by organizing the storytelling and guiding listeners through different parts of the composition. Because of this role, the verse is one of the fundamental elements of songwriting.
