What is a Xiao?

A xiao is a traditional Chinese end-blown bamboo flute known for its soft, calm, and breathy tone. The instrument is typically long and slender, made from bamboo, and has several finger holes along the front that allow the player to change pitch.

The xiao is played by blowing gently across the top opening of the flute while covering and uncovering the finger holes. Unlike the brighter and more energetic dizi, another Chinese flute, the xiao produces a deeper and more mellow sound that is well suited for slow and expressive melodies.

The instrument has a long history in Chinese music and is often associated with meditation, poetry, and scholarly culture. It is commonly used in traditional Chinese solo music and small ensembles, where its gentle tone helps create a reflective and peaceful atmosphere.
