What is a Yangqin?

A yangqin is a traditional Chinese string instrument that belongs to the hammered dulcimer family. It consists of a flat wooden soundboard with many strings stretched across it, which are struck with small bamboo mallets to produce sound. The instrument produces bright, shimmering tones and can play both melodies and rapid musical patterns.

The strings of a yangqin are arranged in groups and stretched across movable bridges that divide them into different pitch sections. Musicians strike the strings with lightweight bamboo beaters, allowing them to perform fast passages and delicate rhythmic patterns. Because the instrument has many strings and multiple pitch ranges, it can produce a wide variety of tones and harmonies.

The yangqin is commonly used in Chinese traditional orchestras, folk ensembles, and regional musical performances. It often plays both melodic and rhythmic roles within an ensemble, adding a sparkling texture to the overall sound.
