What is an AB Form?

An AB form is a simple musical structure that consists of two contrasting sections labeled A and B. The A section introduces the main musical idea or theme, while the B section presents a different melody, harmony, or mood. These two sections typically appear once each, creating a clear contrast within the piece.

In AB form, the music does not return to the original A section after the B section ends. This distinguishes it from other forms such as ABA form, where the first section returns at the end. Because of its straightforward structure, AB form is often used in shorter musical pieces or songs.
