What is an AD/DA Converter?

An AD/DA converter is an audio device that performs both analog-to-digital (AD) and digital-to-analog (DA) signal conversion. It allows audio signals to move between the analog world—where microphones, instruments, and speakers operate—and the digital world used by computers and digital audio workstations (DAWs).

The analog-to-digital (AD) section converts incoming analog audio signals into digital data that can be recorded, edited, and processed by software. The digital-to-analog (DA) section performs the opposite process by converting digital audio data back into an analog signal that can be played through speakers or headphones.

AD/DA converters are built into many audio devices such as audio interfaces, digital mixers, and standalone converter units. High-quality converters are especially important in professional recording environments because they influence the accuracy, clarity, and overall fidelity of both recorded and playback audio.
