What is an Export?
An export is the process of saving audio from a music production project as a standalone file that can be used outside of the digital audio workstation (DAW). During export, the software processes all tracks, effects, automation, and mixing adjustments and creates a finished audio file such as a WAV, AIFF, or MP3.
Exporting allows producers to share their music, upload it to streaming platforms, or move the audio into other software. For example, a producer might export a full stereo mix of a song, individual tracks, or stems for collaboration with other musicians or engineers. The exported file contains the audio exactly as it sounds in the project at the moment of export.
The export process is commonly used at many stages of music production. Producers may export rough mixes to review progress, send tracks to collaborators, or create the final version of a song for mastering and distribution. Exporting ensures that the audio can be played on different devices and platforms without needing the original project session.
