What is an Omnidirectional Microphone?

An omnidirectional microphone is a microphone that captures sound equally from all directions around the microphone. Instead of focusing on a single direction, it picks up audio from the front, sides, and rear.

Because of this pickup pattern, omnidirectional microphones provide a natural and open sound. They are less affected by positioning and do not produce strong proximity effects, which can occur with directional microphones when placed very close to a sound source.

Omnidirectional microphones are commonly used for room recordings, interviews, conference setups, orchestras, and ambient sound capture. They are particularly useful when multiple sound sources need to be recorded evenly within the same space.
