What is Chiptune?

Chiptune is a style of electronic music that uses sound chips from vintage computers, video game consoles, and arcade machines to create music. The genre developed from the simple audio hardware used in early video games, which produced distinctive electronic tones and limited sound channels. These sounds became recognizable for their bright, digital quality and nostalgic connection to classic gaming.

Chiptune music is often created using the same types of programmable sound chips that powered early gaming systems such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Game Boy, and Commodore 64. Because these chips had limited capabilities, musicians developed creative techniques to produce melodies, harmonies, and rhythms within strict technical constraints. The result is a distinctive sound characterized by square waves, rapid arpeggios, and rhythmic electronic patterns.
