What is Chord Progression?

A chord progression is a sequence of chords played in a specific order within a piece of music. These chords provide the harmonic foundation that supports the melody and rhythm of a song. As the chords change over time, they create movement and shape the emotional flow of the music.

Chord progressions are often built around the chords of a particular key. In many cases, musicians describe these chords using Roman numerals that represent their position within the scale. For example, in the key of C major, a common progression is I–IV–V, which corresponds to the chords C major, F major, and G major.

Chord progressions are widely used across many musical styles, including classical, jazz, pop, rock, and blues. Different progressions can create different moods and musical directions. Some progressions sound stable and resolved, while others build tension that leads the listener toward the next chord or section of the song.
