What is Closed Position?
Closed position is a way of arranging the notes of a chord so that they are placed as close together as possible, usually within a single octave. In this arrangement, no chord tone is skipped between the voices, creating a compact and tightly grouped sound.
For example, a C major chord contains the notes C, E, and G. In closed position, these notes might appear stacked closely together, such as C–E–G, with each note positioned within the same octave. If additional chord tones are included, they are also placed as near to each other as possible without leaving large gaps.
Closed position is commonly used in keyboard writing, vocal harmony, and ensemble arrangements when a more concentrated harmonic texture is desired. Compared to open position, which spreads the notes farther apart, closed position produces a fuller and more unified chord sound.
