What is Drop 2 Voicing?
A Drop 2 voicing is a chord voicing technique commonly used in jazz and arranging where the second highest note of a chord is moved down one octave. This change spreads the notes of the chord farther apart, creating a fuller and more open sound.
To create a Drop 2 voicing, you first arrange the chord in close position, where all the notes are stacked as closely together as possible. Then you identify the second note from the top and lower it by one octave. For example, if a C major seventh chord is arranged as C–E–G–B, the second highest note is G. In a Drop 2 voicing, the G would be moved down an octave, creating a new note order such as G–C–E–B.
Drop 2 voicings are widely used in jazz piano, guitar, and big band arranging because they create a balanced and spacious harmonic texture. They are especially useful for chord melodies and ensemble writing, where spreading the notes helps prevent the harmony from sounding too dense or crowded.
