What is Field Recording?
Field recording is the practice of capturing audio from real-world environments outside of a traditional recording studio. These recordings document natural sounds, everyday environments, or specific events using portable recording equipment.
Field recordings can include a wide variety of sounds such as birds, rain, ocean waves, city traffic, footsteps, machinery, crowd noise, or environmental ambience. The goal is usually to capture authentic soundscapes that represent a real location or moment in time.
These recordings are widely used in film, television, video games, music production, and sound design. Sound designers often incorporate field recordings into projects to create realistic environments or to build unique sound effects by manipulating and layering natural sounds.
Field recording is commonly performed using portable microphones and digital recorders, and the captured audio is often edited later using digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro. The technique is also widely used in ambient music, documentary production, and environmental sound research.
