What is Humanization?
Humanization is a technique used in digital music production to make programmed or computer-generated music sound more natural and less mechanical. It works by slightly adjusting the timing, velocity, or other performance details of notes so they resemble the small variations that occur when a human musician performs.
When music is created using MIDI or step sequencing, notes often land exactly on the rhythmic grid and may have identical velocity levels. While this can make the rhythm perfectly precise, it can also sound overly rigid. Humanization introduces subtle variations in timing and dynamics so the performance feels more expressive and realistic.
Humanization is commonly used in digital audio workstations and music production software when programming drums, instruments, or entire arrangements. By adding small imperfections, producers can create a groove that feels more alive and musical. This technique helps electronic and computer-generated music capture some of the natural feel of live performance.
