What is Jump Up?

Jump up is a subgenre of drum and bass known for its energetic basslines, playful sound design, and dancefloor-focused rhythms. The style typically features fast breakbeats combined with bouncy, wobbling bass sounds that create a lively and highly rhythmic groove. Jump up tracks often use bold bass stabs, quirky synth sounds, and catchy hooks designed to get crowds moving, making it one of the most dance-oriented styles within drum and bass.

The genre first emerged in the mid-to-late 1990s as drum and bass producers began experimenting with heavier basslines and more accessible, crowd-friendly sounds. Compared to darker or more technical drum and bass styles, jump up tends to focus on simple but powerful bass patterns that “jump” in and out of the mix. This characteristic bouncing bassline is where the genre gets its name.

Jump up tracks are usually produced at tempos around 170 to 175 beats per minute, consistent with most drum and bass music. The style is particularly popular in club and festival environments because of its high-energy drops and strong rhythmic groove. Today, jump up remains a staple in many drum and bass DJ sets and continues to evolve with modern sound design techniques and heavier bass production.
