What is MIDI Clock?
MIDI Clock is a timing signal used in the MIDI system to synchronize the tempo of multiple electronic music devices and software applications. It ensures that instruments, sequencers, drum machines, and digital audio workstations stay perfectly in time with each other.
When MIDI Clock is active, one device acts as the master clock, sending timing messages that define the tempo. Other devices receive these messages and follow the same tempo, allowing all connected equipment to play rhythms, sequences, and loops in sync.
The MIDI Clock system sends regular timing pulses based on the project’s tempo. These pulses allow devices to know exactly when each beat occurs so that patterns, arpeggiators, and sequencers remain synchronized during playback.
MIDI Clock is commonly used in music production setups involving hardware synthesizers, drum machines, and software instruments. Digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro can act as either the master clock or a synchronized device, allowing multiple pieces of music equipment to run together at the same tempo.
