What is Multiband Compression?
Multiband compression is a type of audio compression that divides the audio signal into multiple frequency ranges, or “bands,” and compresses each band separately. Instead of applying compression to the entire sound equally, this technique allows producers and engineers to control the dynamics of specific parts of the frequency spectrum, such as bass, midrange, or treble.
In a multiband compressor, the audio signal is first split into several frequency bands using filters. Each band then has its own compressor with adjustable settings such as threshold, ratio, attack, and release. This allows precise control over how different parts of the sound behave, such as tightening the bass frequencies while leaving the midrange and high frequencies more natural.
