What is Perfect Cadence?

A perfect cadence is a type of musical cadence that creates a strong sense of resolution at the end of a phrase or section. It occurs when a dominant chord (V) moves to the tonic chord (I), which is the central chord of the key. This progression produces a clear and satisfying feeling of completion in the music.

For example, in the key of C major, a perfect cadence would involve the chord G major (the dominant) resolving to the chord C major (the tonic). Because the dominant chord naturally creates tension that wants to resolve to the tonic, this progression strongly reinforces the key and brings the musical phrase to a stable ending.

Perfect cadences are commonly used in many musical styles, including classical, pop, rock, and jazz. They are often placed at the end of phrases, sections, or entire pieces to provide a sense of closure. Due to their strong resolving quality, perfect cadences are one of the most important harmonic movements in music.
