What is Phase?
Phase refers to the relationship between two or more audio signals in terms of their timing and waveform alignment. It describes how the peaks and troughs of sound waves line up with each other over time.
When signals are in phase, their waveforms align closely, which can reinforce the sound and increase its strength. When signals are out of phase, their waveforms do not align properly, which can cause parts of the sound to cancel each other out or become weaker.
Phase relationships are especially important when recording with multiple microphones. If microphones capture the same sound source at slightly different times or positions, phase issues can occur. Engineers often adjust microphone placement or use phase controls to maintain clear and balanced audio.
