When a producer samples a piece of music, two separate permissions are usually required. One is from the owner of the sound recording (the master), which is typically a record label or recording artist. The other is from the owner of the musical composition, which is usually the songwriter or music publisher.

Sample clearance typically involves negotiating a license agreement that may include fees, royalty shares, or songwriting credit. This process helps protect creators’ rights and prevents copyright infringement when existing recordings are incorporated into new music.
