Zion, Ma/Gaisa Star Search Season 4 Winner, Parts Ways With Welwitschia Music Production

Sylvia Haoses, better known as Zion, has officially ended her contract with Welwitschia Music Production (WMP) after clinching the title in the fourth season of the Ma/Gaisa Star Search last year. The announcement was made to the media outlet VIBEZ! and was framed by Zion as a move driven by her mental well‑being.

In a statement to VIBEZ!, Zion explained that the sudden surge of national attention sparked a personal mental breakdown. "Leaving WMP was not easy," she said, but emphasized that it was a "solid choice for the sake of my mental health." WMP’s own statement confirmed that the split was mutual, citing personal reasons as the underlying cause.

Zion’s musical journey began at the age of 12, nurtured by a family steeped in musical talent. She has performed with several cultural dance groups and has highlighted how the Ma/Gaisa genre lets her sing in her native language and write lyrics that reflect her heritage. She noted that many young Namibian musicians are influenced by foreign styles and sometimes lose sight of their own cultural roots.

Her partnership with Welwitschia started during the competition. The label provided mentorship on professional conduct, vocal technique, and stage presence, yet Zion has not yet released the album that was part of the competition’s prize package—her debut release under WMP.

Looking ahead, Zion revealed she is preparing a new single titled "Not Popularity, but Purpose." She said the song’s lyrics—about divine alignment and choosing purpose over popularity—helped her decide to leave the label. She plans to release her first solo single in August and intends to drop a full album by December. Zion also mentioned that a well‑known producer will be credited on the album, though the name has not yet been disclosed.

Welwitschia Music Production, an independent label based in the Erongo region of Swakopmund, confirmed the artist’s departure in a statement that emphasized personal reasons. Founded by Alvin Naruseb, the label has long promoted Namibian home‑grown music across major genres.

Zion’s decision reflects a broader trend in the Namibian music industry, where artists increasingly seek autonomy after winning talent‑search competitions. The Ma/Gaisa Star Search, now in its fourth season, offers winners prizes that include recording contracts and professional development. However, the pressures of sudden fame and contractual obligations can lead to mental health challenges—a concern that has gained traction in recent years.

The move also underscores the importance of mental health support for emerging artists. While the label’s statement did not detail the specific personal reasons, it confirmed that the split was amicable and that both parties respected the artist’s choice.

As Zion prepares for her upcoming releases, fans and industry observers will watch to see how the new single and album perform, and whether the producer’s identity will influence the project’s reception. Her focus on purpose over popularity may resonate with listeners who value authenticity in an industry that often prioritizes commercial success.

In summary, Zion has ended her partnership with Welwitschia Music Production following her Ma/Gaisa Star Search victory. She is set to release a single in August and a full album by December, with a prominent producer slated to be revealed. The departure reflects a growing awareness of mental health issues among musicians and a shift toward greater artistic independence in Namibia’s music scene.
